UPSC is one of the toughest exams in the world and only top notch players like Doctors and Engineers can sail through the exam! Lakhs of students are competing for limited seats and I might get lost in this fierce competition! Only people who take coaching from Delhi can crack it!

The first and foremost step that needs to be taken before beginning with the preparation for UPSC is to debunk these MYTHS.

Many students are ready to put the hardwork but they are not sure from where to start and how to start.

As we all know that the exam is held is three stages:

  • Preliminary (Objective)
  • Mains (Written)
  • Interview

In the Preliminary examination, it is tested whether the concept is clear or not. Therefore, instead of memorizing, aspirants should start understanding concepts. Mains examination is all about writing skills and presentation. It is expected that the aspirant understands the demand of the question and writes to the point instead of beating around the bush. It is important not to swerve from the theme and present the crux of the subject matter with clarity.

As aspirants embark on this new journey of UPSC preparation, the first thing that needs to be done is to familiarize themselves with the Syllabus properly. Going through the Syllabus thoroughly will help aspirants to develop the idea of what to read and what not to read. There are millions of sources which confuses us at times and hence it is important to filter things out and strictly avoid the redundant materials.

Next, it is important to go through the Previous Year Question Papers and NCERT textbooks to ensure that the foundation is strong with clear fundamental concepts before delving deeper into the subjects.

It is of utmost importance to make your own Notes. Otherwise it would be difficult to remember everything and organize the thoughts in your minds.

Reading one Newspaper without any fail is must.

Often aspirants are caught in the Optional Subject dilemma. Some tend to follow their friend’s advice and others go for the most popular Optional Subjects like Polity, Public administration, history etc. However, it is crucial that the aspirant doesn’t gets carried away and takes the decision based on his own choice.

Undoubtedly, Revision is the most important aspect of preparation. Without effective revision, it would be a herculean task to retain everything and produce it during the exam. Proper revision will help aspirants to deal with the enormous syllabus and hence make the process streamlined and easier.

Attending Coaching Classes regularly is important so that you can stay focused and be guided by your teachers from time to time. Studying for atleast 8 hours (excluding coaching time) is important to maintain consistency.

Finally, it is important that you gauge your preparation. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and work on them. And this can be done by giving as many Mock Tests as possible.

Initially, you might not get expected results. But giving tests regularly will definitely let you know where you stand and what changes you should bring to improve your preparation. This exam demands time and focus. Rome was not built in a day! Let not failures of past stop you from working hard. Be patient and never give up!
