About H1N1 Influenza
Viral Classification & Family: H1N1 is an acute respiratory pathogen belonging to the Influenza A genus within the Orthomyxoviridae family, containing a segmented, single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome.
The Dual Glycoprotein Spikes (H & N):

Hemagglutinin (H1): A surface protein that binds to sialic acid receptors on human respiratory epithelial cells, facilitating viral attachment and cell entry.

Neuraminidase (N1): An essential enzymatic spike that cleaves sialic acid residues, allowing newly assembled virions to bud off and infect adjacent lung cells.
Modes of Transmission: Spreads rapidly via airborne respiratory droplets expelled during coughing or sneezing, aerosol suspension in unventilated indoor spaces, and indirect contact with contaminated fomites (door handles, desks).
Incubation Period & Clinical Symptoms: Has a short incubation period of 1 to 4 days (average 2 days); presents with sudden high fever, persistent dry cough, sore throat, severe myalgia, headaches, fatigue, and nasal congestion.
High-Risk: While healthy adults experience self-limiting illness resolving in 5 to 7 days, severe complications (viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome - ARDS) occur in unvaccinated elderly (65+), children under 5, pregnant women, and individuals with co-morbidities (diabetes, asthma, chronic kidney disease).
Antigenic Drift versus Antigenic Shift:
